Starting from Karystos we head east, following the main costal road. At about 100 m after "Apollon Hotel" we arrive at a fork junction. We follow the right-hand fork along the coast. Just after a cluster of buildings which house the High School, approximately 2.5 km from Karystos, we reach Agios Athanassios beach. It is accessed directly from the road.
The beach faces south and is approximately 120 m long. There are rocks at both ends of the beach while a row of tamarisk trees all along its north side offer thick shade.
On top of a rocky outcrop on the west edge of the beach is the small chapel of Agios Athanassios.
The beach is sandy with some pebbles and small stones and the water is shallow and rather safe. The seabed varies from sandy to rocky and is therefore suitable for snorkelling and amateur fishing.
