AKROPOLIS (NEW) Museum - ATHENS Featured

The New Acropolis Museum focuses on the findings of the site of ancient Athens' Acropolis. It houses every artifact found on the rock and on its feet, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. It also lies on the archaeological site of Makrygianni and the ruins of a part of Roman and early Byzantine Athens.

It has been designed with two objectives: The first to offer the best conditions for the exhibition of its exhibits and secondly to be a Museum that welcomes and befriends its visitors. It opened to the public on June 21, 2009.

A walk through its galleries is a walk through history, between the masterpieces of the Archaic and Classical periods, but also in the ancient neighborhoods of Athens.

The Museum offers many opportunities for rest and recreation, as well as a visitor friendly environment for some of the most emblematic works of antiquity.

LOCATION: It is located by the southeastern slope of the Acropolis hill, on the ancient road that led up to the "sacred rock" in classical times, only 280 meters away from the Parthenon. The entrance is on Dionysiou Areopagitou str. and directly adjacent to the Akropoli metro station.

BUILDING: The building is designed by Bernard Tschumi, revolving around three concepts: light, movement, and a tectonic and programmatic element that "turn the constraints of the site into an architectural opportunity, offering a simple and precise museum" with the mathematical and conceptual clarity of ancient Greek buildings. The collections of the museum are exhibited on three levels while a fourth middle level houses the auxiliary spaces such as the museum shop, the café and the offices. On the first level of the museum there are the findings of the slopes of the Acropolis.
