MNIMATA beach in KARYSTOS (SOUTH EVIA)

This beach is situated on the southwest coast of Karystos, about 8.6 km from the town centre.
The beach is divided in two by a small promontory. It faces north and its length is about 250 m.
Due to its orientation, this beach is sheltered from the southern winds. The morphology of the ground, the sandy seabed and the depth of the water lend it a very beautiful turquoise colour.
The beach was named Mnimata (tombs) because during the Roman Era the area was quarried for its limestone, which was used in the construction of tombs.
It is a sandy beach, with some pebbly parts, and the water is shallow and calm, which makes it suitable for families.
For the first few metres the seabed has some rocks and seaweed, but there are several naturally formed sandy "couloirs" that allow the bathers to enter the water. About 1-2 meters off the shore the seabed becomes sandy. It offers a great variety of shell-fish and is suitable for snorkelling and amateur fishing.
It is easily accessible from the main coastal road, which is asphalted all the way from Karystos to the southwest tip of the bay.
From Karystos, we follow the main coastal road west. About 7 km from Karystos the road goes over a hill, overlooking the beaches down bellow. We can easily distinguish Mnimata beach on the east side and from there we follow the road that goes off to the left that leads down to the beach.
It is a relatively spare beach with a rather narrow strip of sand but the quality of the water and the tranquillity of the area are rewarding.
