OREI port and beach in ISTIAIA (NORTH EVIA)

Orei is the port for Istiea, located on the northern coast of Evia, facing Pelion mountain and the gulf of Pagasitikos. It has a nice beach with clear waters and a Frankish fortress separating the town into two parts.....It is a typical coastal settlement with no special character.... To the West stand the ruins of another castle built upon the site of an earlier citadel. In the township there is the Byzantine church of Aghios Vasilios. In olden times, Orei had a dominatig position, being astride the channel which separates Euboea from the coast of Fthiotida opposite...... Visitors can enjoy fresh fish in the local taverns or "meze" at the famous ouzo bars along the coast. It is worth seeing the remains of the ancient citadel, the venetian and turkish castles, the byzantine church of Agios Vasilios, as well as the Marble Bull, dating back to the 4th century B.C. on the village beach.......Orei is often a stop harbour to boaters cruising Evia or going to Sporades islands..... It is quite safe. In the area, winds are funneled into the channel (Trikeri - Orei) blowing from E-ENE. During spring and autumn, a NW wind of force 2-5 often blows across the valley from the Gulf of Volos (the Pagasitikos Gulf). Southern winds may also blow in the summer months.....Orei port has boat connections with the beautiful Sporades islands (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos).
