KOUNOUPI (KUNUPI) beach and islet in PORTO HELI, PELOPONESE Featured
Kounoupi is probably the best place to swim in the area of Porto Heli and Spetses. It took its name (which means "mosquito" in Greek) from the so named islet, found opposite the beach.
Kounoupi beach is located in a marvelous unspoiled area full of pine trees, in the eastern coast of the Agios Emilianos peninsula. The landscape is pure and exotic with unbelievably transparent turquoise waters that expand to the whole area from the beach to the islet.
The spot is very popular among yachters, who anchor either close to the islet , or close to the beach, or even somewhere in the middle, since waters are tempting in the whole area. It is usually prefered for swimming on their way to/ from Spetses or Porto Heli, beacause it is found close to their route to Athens and the other islands in the area.
The only problem with the beach is that its location makes it vulnerble to -even medium- north winds, which are very often in the summer. In these cases, the sea is not as attractive and anchoring is difficult. However, if south winds prevail swimming there is a must!
Kounoupi is also popular among locals, since it is quite easily accessed by car. Therefore, because of its medium size, it is often quite crowded.
