OUR OPINION: Lilis is one of the most popular taverna's in Syros, mainly due to the breathtaking views offered by its balconies. Therefore, we suggest you to visit Lilis just before the sunset, so that you'll have the chance to admire the changing colours of the endless Aegean blue, the port of Ermoupoli from above and the islands of Tinos and Mykonos. Another reason why Lilis' taverna has become so famous, is because Markos Vamvakaris (the famous Greek "rebetiko" musician) used to perform there, some decades ago.

Some say that these performances lasted only a few days or months, but still it was enough for the place to gain its "glory". Try not to visit this taverna during rush hours. Not only because it will be hard to find a table, but beacause then, you may have the chance to have a chat with Lilis himself. He is a cute "traditional grandfather" who is still in charge of the taverna (along with his family) and who may tell you stories about Vamvakaris and the history of this place.

As about the food, it is said that lately it has lost its "glory". It has been a long time since we visited Lilis and we cannot comment on that. The last time we visited (August 2003) the few dishes that we ordered were tasty.
